On April 9th, 2008 the Boulder area community lost one of its own, Dave Arguijo. Dave was 43 y/o when he passed, losing a courageous battle with a rare form of lung cancer. Some of you might remember Dave for his powerful slapshot or tenacious defense on the ice, but most of us remember him for his off ice accomplishments as a loving father, husband, and businessman and friend. Dave was a devoted family man to his wife Debbie, daughter Meagan and three stepsons. Dave started lacing them up at an early age and earned himself a scholarship to the University of Denver playing under Hall of Famer Ralph Backstrom in 1982. He would later try out for the Colorado Eagles making it into the third round in his late 30's. Until the end he maintained a positive attitude despite the hurdles of undergoing chemotherapy and surgery. Dave had a contageous smile and his presence here has left a lifelong impression on everyone who he encountered.
Saturday August 16th, 2008 marks the first Dave Arguijo Memorial Hockey skate at the YMCA of Boulder Valley from 9:30 am-2:15pm. We are scheduling four teams of 10-12 skaters with a minimum of 2 games played. In honor of Dave's life the YMCA has generously donated 1.5 hours of ice time and a discounted rate for ice time thereafter. Ken Taggart has generously offered to provide officiating for this four game event. Food and beverages will be provided following the day's events and we will hold a silent auction for some great hockey merchandise as well. All player's fees, auction collections, and additional donations will go directly to Dave's family in an effort to reduce the burden of the medical costs incurred during his illness.
Dave's presence here on earth has left an imprint on everyone he encountered. His courageousness in the storm of adversity should serve as an example of how we should approach life. Take nothing for granted, make everyday count and hold family and friends close to your heart. This story could have well been told about any one of us.
